The brain dump method
A brain dump is useful only if it makes your head quieter. The trick is to capture first, then give each thought a destination instead of maintaining one enormous list.

What a brain dump is for
Working memory is poor storage. Unfinished tasks, worries and ideas keep resurfacing because your brain is trying not to lose them. A brain dump creates a trusted external place for those loose ends. It is not a productivity contest and it does not require acting on everything you write.
A 15-minute method
- Choose one centre. Call it “On my mind” and remove every category for the first five minutes.
- Capture fragments. Write short phrases. Do not research, solve, schedule or polish while capturing.
- Sort by meaning. Create branches for Do, Decide, Remember, Worry and Maybe. Move every fragment once.
- Find the next physical action. “Kitchen” is a topic; “measure the empty wall” is an action. Clarify only the items you intend to move.
- Close the loop. Schedule urgent work, keep useful reference notes, and deliberately delete or defer the rest.
Why a map works better than one long list
A list makes a dentist appointment look equal to a career question. A map separates unlike things without requiring you to know the perfect system in advance. You can see that ten separate worries belong to one unresolved decision, or that several tasks are really one project.
When to stop
Stop when you can look away without feeling responsible for remembering the remaining thoughts. Then choose no more than three next actions. The goal is relief and clarity, not an exhaustive inventory of your life.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I do a brain dump?
Use one when mental noise is interfering with focus, or as a short weekly reset. Doing it constantly can become another form of avoidance.
Should I keep every thought from a brain dump?
No. Delete duplicates, discard ideas you do not want, and keep only useful reference or actionable work. Capturing something does not create an obligation.
